Patrick Dickie is a producer of opera and contemporary with a particular interest in expanding opera into unexpected aesthetic and social areas. Involved in over sixty premieres, he nurtures conditions for risk taking for artists and audiences, and promotes independent voices.
He was the Artistic Director of Portugal’s National opera Teatro Naçional São Carlos from 2015 to 2020. From 1998 to 2014, in various roles, he produced and programmed new operas, opera productions and music theatre works at the Almeida Theatre, Aldeburgh Festival and English National Opera. He has produced the world premiere of operas by Harrison Birtwistle, Elena Langer and Richard Ayres; the opera debuts of Circa’s Yaron Lifschitz, Fiona Shaw, Simon McBurney and Punchdrunk and significant revivals of work by Thomas Adès, Michael Nyman and Hans Werner Henze.
He has devised new opera writing programmes (Jerwood and Genesis Foundations), co-founded Sonica, Glasgow, and the international network agora.
He is currently working an an independent producer and artistic adviser.
